Part 5

What Rachel Knew

I barely slept that night. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same three people making decisions around me. Ethan. Maya. Rachel. And somehow, I was the only one who had no idea what was happening in my own marriage. The next morning, Rachel messaged me. “I’m sorry. I assumed you knew.” I stared at the screen for almost a full minute before replying. “Knew what exactly?” Her answer came quickly. “That Ethan was helping Maya with tuition.” I typed, deleted, then typed again. “Did you know the money came from our house savings?” This time, she took longer. Finally, three dots appeared. Then disappeared. Then came back. “Yes.” My chest tightened. I called her. Rachel answered on the second ring. “Claire, I really am sorry.” “You knew he was taking fourteen thousand dollars from our shared account?” “He told me you both had discussed it.” “But you just said you assumed I knew.” “I did.” “That doesn’t make sense.” Rachel went quiet. Then she sighed. “Ethan said you were hesitant.” I stood up from my sister’s kitchen table. “Hesitant?” “He said you didn’t understand why Maya needed this.” “He never asked me.” “I didn’t know that.” Her voice sounded sincere. That almost made it worse. Rachel continued. “For what it’s worth, Maya really did hold that family together.” “I know.” “She gave up a lot.” “I know.” “And Ethan has carried guilt about it for years.” “I know.” Every answer came out colder than the last. Because I believed her. I believed Maya had sacrificed. I believed Ethan felt responsible. I even believed Rachel thought she was helping. But none of that changed the fact that my husband had discussed my character with his ex-wife before giving away our money. “Did he say anything else about me?” I asked. Rachel hesitated. That pause told me there was more. “Rachel.” “He said you would make it about the house.” I laughed once. “The money was for the house.” “He said you cared more about the plan than the people.” I stopped smiling. Then my sister walked into the room holding my phone charger. She looked at my face and asked, “What happened?” Before I could answer, another call came through. Ethan. I almost ignored it. Then I saw the message beneath his name. “I need to tell you the full truth about the money.”
